Italy was for years our favourite holiday destination. We visited many beautiful places in different locations. Our first time spending a holiday in Puglia we fell in love with this region and especially the many trulli. The idea arose to buy a trullo and realise our dream. After a long search we found our spot! An ancient trulli with three cones and an attached old farmworkers house (lamia) on an olive grove of one hectare, and then also a few steps from the beautiful town of Ostuni and near the beach!
The trullo has been restored to its ancient original condition and equipped with every comfort. A bathroom and kitchen was made and heating and windows fitted. We pruned all the trees and planted all kinds of plants that do not survive the winter in the Netherlands. A true Mediterranean feeling! The collapsed walls were restored with the old authentic stone that are so typical of Puglia. We even got a real driveway with a gate!
Later we started the renovation of the guest house. This tiny house is an old farm workers cottage which was mainly used for the storage of the harvest. It is located some 20 meters from our house. The walls are certainly one meter thick and a wooden floor had been raised for making a loft in the bedroom. There is a bathroom, kitchen and large windows for light and views. All that was needed were large porches that would provide much needed shade. These were built and provided with Bougainville.
The idea of renting was born. How lovely would it be to let others enjoy our property? That’s why we decided to buy a Yurt and put it on the field with almond and olive trees behind the guesthouse and build an outdoor bathroom.
